2011 Day Two: Rivanna Trail
The second day of StoryLine was even hotter than the first but that didn’t deter the kids. If anything, it encouraged them—to get in the water.
This time, we met in Jordan Park on the banks of Moores Creek, which flows out of Ragged Mountain Reservoir (yesterday’s stop) and will empty at tomorrow's location. We chose the park because the Rivanna Trail passes through and it boasts several confluences with smaller tributaries, including the principal drainage from the Downtown Mall.
Chris Gensic, trails coordinator for the City of Charlottesville, showed us how water moves through our community, both above and below ground. We saw fish, mussels, birds, crawfish, and a few items that were human in origin—perhaps washed in through the storm drains.
The kids worked on the second second-section of their three-part drawings, with watercolor and pencil. They didn’t mind getting a little dirty or wet, and seemed to relish the opportunity to wade in the cool water.
One of the best things about Charlottesville is the circle of trails that surrounds it. Woods such as these are no more than a few blocks from any residence and we hope the kids will come back and visit again soon.
